Frequently Asked Questions
What is ASSIST?
ASSIST, the Associated Security Services and Investigators of the State of Texas, is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization and the legislative arm of the private security and private investigation industries in Texas. Since 1970, we have been fighting for the rights of security officers, private investigators, and the companies that employ them at the Texas State Capitol.
Who can join ASSIST?
ASSIST membership is open to licensed private security officers, private investigators, security and investigation companies, vendors who serve the industry, and associates looking to stay connected. If you are licensed by or registered with the state agency overseeing private security and private investigation in Texas, you are eligible to join.
What does ASSIST actually do for its members?
ASSIST monitors and influences legislation affecting the private security and private investigation industries, helps members navigate DPS audits and compliance issues at no additional cost, provides opportunities to earn CE credits, and connects professionals across Texas through regional meetings and our annual convention. We are active year round, not just during legislative sessions.
How is ASSIST different from other industry organizations?
ASSIST is the only organization exclusively representing the private security and private investigation industries at the Texas State Capitol. We have a lobbyist monitoring the Capitol on behalf of our members every day, and our elected board brings over 300 years of combined industry experience to every decision we make.
What membership options are available and how much do they cost?
ASSIST offers four membership types. Voting Member at $295 per year is for licensed individuals who want a direct voice in the organization. Corporate Member at $195 per year is for security and investigation companies. Vendor Member at $395 per year is for businesses serving the industry. Associate Member at $30 per year is for individuals looking to stay connected and earn CE credits. Visit our Member Benefits page for a full breakdown of what each membership includes.
How do I earn continuing education credits through ASSIST?
ASSIST members can earn CE credits at regional chapter meetings held throughout the year, or complete all required CE credits in one weekend at our annual convention. Regional meeting schedules vary by area. Visit our Upcoming Events page for details.
What should I do if I encounter an unlicensed security operator?
You can report unlicensed activity directly through our website. ASSIST takes these reports seriously and takes the appropriate steps to address them. Your information will never be shared with DPS unless you specifically authorize us to do so. Visit our Report Unlicensed Activity page to submit a report.
Can ASSIST help me if I am having issues with a DPS auditor?
ASSIST can help you understand your rights and obligations and provide guidance on how to respond to auditors and navigate the appeals process. We are here to make sure you do not have to face these situations alone. Please note that ASSIST does not provide legal advice or represent members in legal proceedings.
What is the ASSIST Fallen Officer Fund?
The Fallen Officer Fund was established in 2004 to provide financial assistance to security officers and their families in the wake of line of duty deaths and other catastrophic events. The fund is sustained through regional fundraising and contributions from supporters. Visit our Fallen Officer Fund page to learn more or to donate.
How do I stay up to date on what ASSIST is doing?
The best ways to stay informed are to become a member, sign up for our newsletter, and follow us on social media. Members also receive access to exclusive legislative and regulatory updates through our members only portal.
